Long Term Quality Change and development are an inevitable part of our fast growing community. Prior Lake will continue to experience changes and new development until we are fully built-out in 2030 or beyond. Because it is difficult to undo or redo development, decisions we make now will determine the quality of our community for many decades into the future. In guiding this growth , I favor long term quality of the end result over short term quick fixes.
Economic Development We all want to have vibrant, thriving businesses and jobs close to home. It is tempting to take shortcuts to achie that. But propping up development with incentives and tax breaks often leads to only a short term boost and not a lasting, quality economic base. The real drivers of long term economic development are quality neighborhoods, transportation, stability, and a well-educated work force.
Shakopee Mdwakanton Sioux Community Enterprises In talking about economic development in Prior Lake, many ignore the role of the SMSC casino gaming and other enterprises because of the limited contribution they make to our tax base. But the SMSC businesses are our largest employer and they draw a huge amount of traffic and visitors to Prior Lake. On the other hand, the SMSC presents challenges to competing local business growth due to their property tax advantage. The SMSC also holds large tracts of undeveloped land in the area. Prior Lake’s economic future is heavily influenced by the SMSC businesses and we must not ignore that fact in our plans.
